What is Fre Flo Do? Reggie Bush's New Training ProgrammeBy Adam Sinicki
Fre Flo Do (but with little accents over the vowels) is the latest training craze to hit America, created by Kappel LeRoy and advocated by NFL player Reggie Bush. Translating literally as 'Life On The Path For Which Freedom Flows', it utilises the 'Launchpad' - an electric treadmill that has no screen at the end allowing you to step on and off either side. It is the 'official platform of the fre flo do experience'. Much as my kitchen table is the official platform of my eating experience. Under the guidence of a 'tracker' (I think Kappel enjoys making up words), what you then do is to train catching balls, diving over obstacles and punching pads while continuing to stay on the spot on the launchpad. This obviously works by forcing you to keep moving and to be fully aware of your body at all times, the providing a 'dynamic environment' as Kappel like to call it. As any karate ka will no, executing a perfect punch takes a lot of concentration and energy; now imagine to that while walking or jogging backwards. If you think it's easy then you obviously aren't imagining right...The training style also has routes in martial arts and eastern philosophy and encourages you to be able to adapt fluidly to any situation and let go of 'the fear'. It is, as Kappel likes to call it, 'The Artform of the New Millenia' (he's also quite a dramatic chap obviously), and Reggie Bush is so impressed by it that he has chosen to train with it at the expense of even his team workouts. I feel his abs and agility on the pitch speak for themselves (I wish my abs could speak...). That said I'm curious what benefit this form of training offers the arms and pecs and doubt that on its own Fre Flo Do can offer a complete enough training regime. So how can you take the lessons from Fre Flo Do and integrate them into your own training? Well for one it teaches us to keep the body guessing - the more unusual angles and situations you can train in the more adaptable you'll become. Secondly it teaches us that we can combine functional strength training with cardiovascular exercise (see I told you!). Finally it teaches us to break treadmills. To have a go at something similar tonight try training on a gradient or unstable surface for an excellent full body workout and slice of variation pie. Adman out.
